CHDR summer school: “It’s not a crime to be human”

Summer school "It is not a crime to be human" organized by the Center for History, Democracy and Reconciliation

The summer school “It’s not a crime to be human” is a project that was held 11. and September 12, 2015. in Novi Sad.

The lectures were realized in cooperation with the Center for Tolerance and Youth Development (CTRO) and the Faculty of European Legal and Political Studies (FEPPS).

At the beginning of the meeting, the participants were addressed by prof. Dr. Marijana Pajvančić – dean, prof. Dr. Darko Gavrilović – president of CHDR and Stefan Ljubičić – president of CTRO.

The lectures covered topics that are extremely important for society.

Some of the speakers focused on national minorities, people with special needs and the population living below the poverty line.

Topics related to the fight against hate speech, the fight for human rights, the importance of youth festivals for the politics of reconciliation were also in focus.

In addition to these topics, the participants also learned about the process of European integration.

The lecturers at this summer school were prof. Dr. Darko Gavrilović , assistant professor Ljubica Đorđević , Ph.D., Assoc. Dr. Igor Stamenković and Prof. Dr. Zoran Đerić .

The summer school was visited by 46 participants who were students of the University of Novi Sad, the University of Belgrade, the University of Education and the University of the Business Academy.

The goal of this project was to provide students and young people with new information and knowledge about current social issues and problems.

In addition, the goal was to create a space for dialogue and exchange of opinions between the participants.

This summer school was also a great opportunity to learn, connect and gain new experiences for the participating students.

Holocaust and genocide - impact on regional stability policy

The summer school “Holocaust and genocide – impact on regional stability policy” was organized for the second time in Golubić. The school was organized as part of an international scientific conference on Serbian-Croatian relations .

The summer school brought together students and activists of the non-governmental sector from Croatia and Serbia. It aimed to give the participants the opportunity to learn about the impact of the Holocaust and genocide on the politics of regional stability and reconciliation.

War crimes and historical injustices related to the Second World War, thanks to contemporary political elites, continue to affect the political relations of the two countries. A biased approach to the study of the mentioned topics and the willingness to manipulate them encourage intolerance and bigotry. The gathered lecturers presented the participants of the summer school with the means by which the mentioned issue can be approached impartially.

The foreign lecturers were Michael Miller from the Central European University and Claudia Lichnofsky from the Georg Eckert Institute. The lecturers from the region were: Darko Gavrilović from the University of Novi Sad, Davor Pauković from the University of Dubrovnik and Janko Veselinović from the University of Novi Sad.

The lectures included the following teaching units: Holocaust, genocide, development of regional stability policy in Croatia and Serbia and improvement of relations between Croatia and Serbia.

The CHDR summer school is a significant initiative that aims to bring together activists and students from Serbia and Croatia, two countries that have faced complex historical and political relations.

Through this school, the participants had the opportunity to get to know and understand each other better, as well as to acquire new knowledge and skills that will be useful in their future activism.

"Identity Protection and the Holocaust"

Summer School of the Center for History, Democracy and Reconciliation

The summer school “Identity Protection and the Holocaust” brought together students from Croatia and Serbia.

The school aimed to provide students with the opportunity to learn about various aspects of identity protection and the Holocaust.

The lecturers at the summer school were:

Maria Kavala from Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki,
Domna Kofa from Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki,
Janko Veselinović, professor at the University of Novi Sad,
Darko Gavrilović , professor at the University of Novi Sad.

Students had the opportunity to hear lectures on the following topics: the history of the Holocaust, the protection of the identity of minority groups and the protection of human rights.

This summer school is an important initiative that brought together students from two countries that were faced with complex political and historical relations. Through this school, students had the opportunity to get to know and understand each other better. This was an opportunity for them to acquire new knowledge and skills that will be useful in their academic and professional development.

CHDR, as the organizer of the summer school, hopes that such initiatives will contribute to the development of better Serbian-Croatian relations .

In this way, we want to contribute to the policy of regional stability and to have a positive influence on social and political processes in the countries of the region.

We hope that such summer schools will continue to be organized in the future and that they will contribute to building bridges between people and cultures in the region.

CHDR summer school “Nations and identities – aspects and perspectives”

"Nations and identities – aspects and perspectives"

A student expert meeting entitled “Nations and Identities – Aspects and Perspectives” was held as part of the CHDR summer school project. 18. and March 19, 2013. at the History Department of the Faculty of Philosophy in Banja Luka. The gathering was organized by the Center for the History of Democracy and Reconciliation (CHDR). Support for the organization was provided by: Faculty of Philosophy in Banja Luka , Association of History Students “Dr. Milan Vasić” , Faculty of Science and Mathematics in Novi Sad and Faculty of European Legal and Political Studies in Novi Sad .

At the opening of the meeting, a lecture was given by Dr. Hava Baruch from the Yad Vashem Institute in Jerusalem . The topic of the lecture was “Everyday life in the ghetto.” The meeting attracted a lot of attention from students and the media. This showed the need for intensifying the professional cooperation of students from the region.

Due to the great interest and the need for cooperation, the organizers decided that similar gatherings will be held twice a year. The next meeting will be held at the end of October 2013. in Novi Sad.

This gathering provided an opportunity for students to learn about different aspects of nations and identities. Also to exchange ideas and experiences with their colleagues from the region. Lecture by Dr. Hava Baruch provided an insight into the life and problems of the people who lived in the ghettos during World War II.

We hope that these gatherings will continue to take place and that students will have the opportunity to meet new ideas and perspectives, as well as to expand their network of colleagues and friends.
